PROM 📐 Passive Range of Movement (PROM) exercises may form an important part of your dog’s home exercise regime! 🐶💪 Aims/Benefits of PROM exercises: 1. Maintains and improves flexibility and the range of movement within the joint 2. Supports synovial fluid production and lubrication of the joint 3. Improves blood flow to the joint 4. Promotes healing 5. Reduces inflammation 6. Promotes joint health, function and proprioception 7. Improves tissue length and extensibility 8. Reduces atrophy of the surrounding muscles 9. Prevents formation of scar tissue and development of contractures 10. Reduces stiffness and pain Common conditions that benefit from PROM exercises: 1. Osteoarthritis 2. Early rehab post-op orthopaedic surgery 3. Muscle atrophy/paresis as a result of neurological condition/Spinal cord injury/IVDD The amount of movement and number of reps you provide to your dog’s joint will vary depending on their presenting condition and tolerance, so please be guided by your Physiotherapist and only complete PROM exercises once you feel confident to do so. NOTE: If I recommend you to complete PROM exercises as part of your dog’s home exercise regime, I will always provide a demo video which you can use to refer back to 😊🐾 🎥 Video ft. lovely Lenny (with consent) - demonstrating a cyclical PROM exercise routine. #PROM #PROMexercises #vetphysiotherapy #vetphysio #caninetherapy #theeppingforestvetphysio

LASER THERAPY 🔦🐾 Laser Therapy, also known as Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or Photobiomodulation (PBM), is one of the treatments I may use within your dog’s Physiotherapy session, where appropriate and if clinically indicated. Laser Therapy is safe, non-invasive and uses low-intensity laser light, of a specific wavelength, to penetrate the skin and be absorbed by the underlying cells. This process increases cellular energy and stimulates cell proliferation and function to help optimise the body’s own healing processes and aids in tissue repair and regeneration. Additionally, the process leads to an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines, which play a role in assisting to reduce inflammation and in turn, reduces pain. Uses/benefits of Laser Therapy: - To relieve pain - To reduce inflammation, swelling & oedema - To promote tissue healing - To reduce trigger points/muscle spasms - To speed up wound healing - To increase circulation - To increase synovial fluid - To improve oxygen delivery Conditions that benefit from Laser Therapy: - Arthritis/Joint Pain (to reduce inflammation and pain) - Healing wounds (to reduce length of healing time of surgical incisions, injuries and skin ulcers) - Soft tissue injuries (to aid tissue healing of strains, sprains etc) - Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) (to reduce inflammation which may help restore underlying nerve function) - Post-surgical rehab (to speed up tissue healing, reduce pain and inflammation and optimise recovery time) *NOTE: Not all presentations or clinical conditions are appropriate for Laser Therapy and some are in fact contraindicated. I will therefore only use Laser Therapy if it is safe to do so, clinically indicated and felt to be beneficial for your dog! **Side effects of Laser Therapy are minimal, but may include temporary redness or a slight tingling sensation at the treatment site. ⚡️ P A I N ⚡️ Most humans can easily express their pain, making assessment and treatment somewhat easier. However, throughout my time working in the NHS I have worked with patients who are unable to express pain verbally, due to conditions such as Stroke and Dementia. I have therefore learned the importance of observing for non-verbal signs of pain. Our doggos don’t have that ability to verbalise what they’re feeling either, which is why it’s vital to look out for these non-verbal signs of pain! Common signs of pain in dogs, include: ⚡️ Licking or worrying at the painful area ⚡️ Panting ⚡️ Lip smacking ⚡️ Showing the whites of their eyes ⚡️ Whimpering / growling ⚡️ Withdrawal / low mood ⚡️ Reduced movement and activity levels ⚡️ Reduced appetite ⚡️ Increased heart rate / resp rate #pain #signsofpain #vetphysio #vetphysiotherapy #animalphysio

Does your dog get stressed or anxious being taken to the vets or when attending a clinical setting? 🤔🥺😬 One of the reasons I have chosen to offer home visits is so that I can assess and treat your dog in the comfort of their own home, as it is proven that dogs (and people) rehab far better in a relaxed, familiar and meaningful environment 🏠 It can also be really helpful for me to see your dog at home to visualise their day-to-day routine and where they spend most time, as depending on their condition and presentation, I may be able to suggest or recommend making minor adaptations or modifications to your home environment to improve your dog’s movement, function, wellbeing and quality of life 🛋️ In addition, me coming to you saves you the stress and hassle of having to transport your dog to an appointment 🚙 Alternatively, I am happy to meet you and your dog in a public space, such as a local park, if this is preferred! 🌳 Get in touch to book your first appointment with The Epping Forest Vet Physio! 🐾 #theeppingforestvetphysio
